Lights Out

Lights dim, a familiar tune begins. I close my eyes and move in rhythm. Muscle memory. All too familiar with the layers of the instrumentals, I let the music lead each movement ‘Your love is bright as ever, even in the shadows....’ I let it take me to the realm, a familiar realm, too real, too good.  

My heart is full, my insides about to burst. With love, with joy, with appreciation. I lift my hands and sway to the beat. ‘Your heart is glowing and I'm crashing into you....’ I look into the eyes of the one I love. Although there is a lot of space between us, I am comfortable, at home in the presence of the one I love. We dance, savouring the distance between us and doing our own thing, ultimately in rhythm with each other and the music.  

Strobe lights in full effect as though a juxtaposition of the lyrics ‘In the darkest night hour....’ The beat takes charge of my movement, a total surrender of the body. I flow and make gestures; ‘your face is all that I see....’ I hold the gaze and all fear is expelled. I feel the trust grow and I have no problem as the recipient is trustworthy. ‘Nobody sees what we see, they’re just hopelessly gazing, Ooh baby take me, me....’, he takes my hand, spins me around and lets go. Once again, a distance. 

And then like kids, we shout in fervidity ‘in the darkest night hour.... I'll search through the crowd; your face is all that I see....’ In aggressive gesticulation we sing ‘I love you like XO, you love me like XO....all that I see, give me everything. Baby love me lights out...’  

The lights dim and we give in to dancing and move in sync, softly mirroring the diminuendo and then add vim as the music builds to the chorus for the last time. We slowly close the distance between us. And finally, I am in the arms of the one I love. In gratitude, I close my eyes and we let the song play out and all that is left is his heartbeat. Lights out.
